Air Conditioners, Air Coolers & Fans

Pedestal Fan Buying Guide

The pedestal fans are types of portable electric fans. They are electrically-powered appliances that are usually used to control climate, improve personal comfort, add ventilation, and to provide drafts.

These fans are axial fans because they utilizes blades that force air to move parallel to the shaft about which the fan blades rotate. The basic elements of the pedestal fan includes the fan base; blades; armature and lead wires; blade guard; motor housing; oscillator shaft; and oscillator gearbox.

The blade sweep of a fan is generally the circular area that is covered by the fan's blades while in rotation. The diameter of a fan's blade sweep, on fans with multiple blades, is measured by taking the distance from the edge of one blade to the edge of the opposite blade.

Generally, the sweep is 400mm or 450mm.

Despite their cooling power, most pedestal fans work quietly. However, some people enjoy the white noise that some fans emit (especially during sleep).

Plastic fans can look cheap but can be more practical. They don't rust. Stainless steel will still rust (most steel fans are only coated or chromed anyway), and even brass fans can oxidize and require polishing.

Metal fans are tougher and will stand up to being knocked over while plastic can crack.

Most of the fans have blades made of alumunium.

Fans will collect dust after a few months of use. An easily removable grill is convenient. Unfortunately some fans need to be unscrewed and disassembled to reach the fan blades. Others may not be designed to be opened at all.

For safety, the fan should be unplugged before any cleaning.

Oscillating, Rotating Grill or Fixed

Most of the fans have oscillation as 90 degrees, the pedestal is stationary whereas the grill rotates. Oscillating fans can be used with the oscillation switched off, leaving the oscillating feature as a "just in case" for some occasions.

There are fans which allow vertical tilting also, this varies from 20 degrees to 30 degrees.

Industrial fans are rated by the amount of air they move: Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM). Consumer fans are rarely rated this way.

The input power rating (watts) of the fan is an imperfect but usable indication of the wind power of a consumer fan.

50 to 60 watts is average 80 to 100 watts is about the maximum practical for home use If not specified in documents, the fan's wattage should be labeled at the back or bottom of the fan.

The fan speed is specified in RPM (Rotations per minute). The fans come up with speed regulators that let you control the fan speed.

The pedestal fans allow the height of the fan to be adjusted.

Nowadays, some pedestal fans also come with remote controls which give all functions at the tip of your hand.
