There are many types of pillows available so you need to look carefully. The pillows are an important criteria on how well you sleep. Pillow fills can be made out of polyster,foam, cotton or wool. All these have their pros and cons. Polyster though reasonably priced and comfortable, can be difficult to clean.Foam pillows offer support and are good choice if you have neck problems. Cotton and wool pillows are natural and hence more comfortable. Some of the more expensive brands include oxygen-infused pillows and herbal fills that contain sweet-smelling, soothing herbs that promise a refreshing sleep.

Sleeping positions

Make sure you select a soft pillow if you sleep on your stomach or tend to move around during your sleep. This will prevent you from straining your neck. Buy a medium pillow for good support if you usually sleep on your back. Try a firm pillow for maximum support if you sleep on your side.


The size of the pillow you pick will depend on the size of the bed. There are specific pillows available for king and queen sized beds.
A regular pillow is 18 by 27 inches while a large pillow is 24 by 36 inches.

  6. Orthopedic pillows are designed to fit the contours of the neck and shoulder and are ideal for people suffering from neck and shoulder pain or joint stiffness, insomnia or snoring problems. Air pillows are recommended for people suffering from acute spondylitis.
  7. Doctors recommend that you change your pillow every year. Even the most durable pillow should be get rid of after 2-3 years.
  8. Using inner pillow slips - plain cotton cover slips with zippers that go under the pillow cases - helps maintain hygiene, protects against allergy and increases the life of the pillows.
